Hello,
I'm new here and this is my first post. I need to find some advice on friction ring components for my 20ga Sportsman. I know there are a few threads on this topic contained herein, but I've read through them and I'm still in need of some clarification.
The other day I was getting my Sportsman ready for this upland season and when I took the forearm off to check and lube the friction spring, the little washer/nubbin that holds the coil spring inside the mag tube shot out and my spring flew ten feet into my back yard. I managed to get all parts back together again but something looks weird - like I'm missing a steel ring. If I remember correctly, the Sportsman 20ga friction components goes like this: heavy steel recoil spring over the mag tube, then a solid steel ring around the tube resting against the top of the recoil spring, with the brass ring on top of that, followed by the install of the forearm. But I'm not sure of this because I've read so many posts about friction rings I'm getting dizzy. I seem to recall the 20ga Sportsman might have been a little different - by not having that steel ring (only the brass ring). Anyway, I've taken a close up photo of my mag tube with the recoil spring and brass spring on it. Is this all I need? Or should I go into my back yard and start pawing through the grass for a steel ring????
Thank you,
Cliff

Advice on Rem. Model 11 Sportsman Friction Ring
You better go in the back yard with a magnet. You need a friction ring between the spring and bronze friction piece. It is installed in one way or the other depending on if you are shooting heavy loads or light so the gun will recoil right. Make sure someone didnt install it at the other end of the spring against the receiver. I have found many that way and it is wrong! Jay Huber RSA
Jay, thank you. I just stopped by a local shop that had several Brownell's 16ga/20ga friction rings in stock. These are for Browning A5's. I bought one and just installed it - on TOP of the recoil spring with the beveled edge pointing towards the muzzle, and the brass ring on top of that. I'm almost positive that's the configuration the old ring was in. I'll find out if this works this coming weekend when I try to shoot the shotgun. I may still order a spare ring/friction piece and recoil spring from e-gunparts as a backup.
Thanks,
Cliff
