1894 12 ga dam.bbl

Post by Ken Hurst »

I have just learned that I will soon be receiving an 1894 damascus bbl'd 12 ga. Rem dbl sans butt stock. This is easily replaced BUT, I'm told that the top rib is missing. I'm in hopes that someone her might have a blown dam. bbl that I could buy a top rib from.

In as much as the butt stock and forend will be replaced with a show grade of English walnut and checkered with the best Rem checkering pattern, I feel I'm saving another piece from the junk heap. The owner said he was going to toss it if I wouldn't take on a renovation. Seems the dam. bbl's have a shiny bore so well worth the extra expense of the rib & soldering job.

As I'm an engraver with 49 years in the business, I want to engrave this piece. Hopefully there is someone who has picyures of the top, bottom and sides of the fanciest Rem. dbl ever made that I could copy.

Any help/opinions or suggestions along this line would be greatly appreciated. Ken

Ken,
The only parts gun I have is a 1900 with cut 27inch barrels.

You need to find out if the gun is a concave rib or flat rib. My keeper guns have flat ribs until #132328 and concave starting at #133281. Ill keep my eyes open for a useable rib though. Let us know about flat or concaved.

Here are my 1894 gun specs:

107242 (1898)B Damascus 12ga Standard Lock, flat rib, raised safety, two screw bottom tang, reinforced forend lug with spur.

112228 (1899)A Damascus 12ga " "

116128 (1899)AE Damascus 12ga " "

118976 (1900)B Damascus 10ga " "

125336 (1902)CE Damascus 12ga " "

P132328 (1905)CEO 12ga Improved lock " "

133281 (1906)FE Trap barrels only Concave Rib, lug not reinforced

133930 (1906)FE 12ga Improved lock,Concave Rib,Raised Safety, lug not reinforced, two screw bottom tang.

138123 (1910)AE Damascus 12ga on 16ga frame, Improved lock, concave rib, dished out safety, lug not reinforced, one screw bottom tang

Here is a pretty good disucssion of 1894 Remingtons:

Ken,
Those guns are not mine, they were on a Julia auction in 2005. Do you have Semmers book? It has more pics of the three known specials and lots of EE guns.
