Hello,
A simple question for a friend whose 870 desires a new barrel.
Will a standard 3" 870 barrel fit the Super Magnum 870 reciever? It appears that the owners manual say's one thing and Remington's website another.
Or, should I call Remington tomorrow in Madison, NC and find out?
Best and thank you in advance for the replies.
Chris
Barrel interchangeability for the 870 Express Super Magnum.
What do you want to do with this shotgun and what is wrong with the origional barrel.
The Super Magnum is chambered for the 3 1/2 inch or smaller round.
The Magnum barrel is only chambered for the 3 inch round.
Since the barrel and not the reciever is marked for the size of round that the firearm can safely shoot, I don't see where it would make much of a difference - since they appear to be machined the same way.
Just that the reciever is larger - along with the bolt - because it has to fit in the space machined for the ejection of the spent round.
As long as the bolt locks up and the round fires - I guess it wouldn't matter which barrel was on the gun.
If you have access to a barrel, just fire a low brass shell or two and look at the spent case after you fire it. As long as there is no bulges in the brass or in the hull and there is no primer sticking out the end of the shell - I guess it would be ok.
But if you have the origional barrel, you are better off to stick with what you already have and BUY a replacement barrel - if you want a shorter barrel or one with a vent rib. Since all the newer Super Mag Shotguns has a choke tube installed in the barrel - there is no reason to interchange barrels to change the amount of choke in the barrel.

Hello Sir,
Thank you kindly for your reply. The answer is found in the picture posted below:

Quite simply, I wanted to get more versatility out of the Remington 870 and have it serve "double duty" in my household. It is a very fitting combination!
The new barrel fit and functions very well. I can only use up to 3" shells with the new barrel. I did try to fit a Remington synthetic stock to it, but the taper and shape of the reciever are different than the standard 870 non-magnum reciever and couldn't accomplish that part of the project.
I am very happy with how it turned out!
Best and thank you sir,
Chris
