serial numbers on remington's

i know up until 1968 serial numbers were not required on guns, but except for the old bolt action 22's i have never seen a remington without one until last week. i ran across a first year production 552 speedmaster barrel code P D 1957 without a serial number. when Remington started making these rifles did they not serilize them or did they perhaps skip stamping the number into the reciever? everything else was stamped into the side of the receiver and barrel. thanks for any help

Model 552s (with very limited exceptions) did not have serial numbers until October 1967.

thank you for the information. i had just never seen a semi auto or pump without a serial number.
