Remington SxS called a lifter

Iam a newbie to your forum i just bought a old Remington sxs,the dealer told me that it was what they call a lifter.Can someone explain?Also how many years did they make them?And last what type of barrels did they have on them.

E. Remington & Sons made nine different hammer double barrel models -- the Whitmore designed "lifter" models were 1873, 1875, 1876, 1878 and 1879. Conventional toplever models were 1882, 1883, 1885 and 1887. We need more information, and pictures would really help, if we are to tell you anything about your gun.
