Remington 11-87 modifications.......Answers please

Post by leo6223 »

Hello,

New to the site and I'm hoping to find some good info on the 11-87.

I'm getting ready to modify my 11-87 into a Short Barrel Shotgun (all the proper ATF paperwork applied for).

The intent is to use the gun for SWAT work which is why I'm going SBS. The problem with shortening the barrel (an 18" 'police' model barrel with 2 gas ports) is opening up the gas ports......HOW BIG SHOULD I MAKE THEM.

Second, with the bulk of the body armor that we wear I'm looking to shorten the stock. Obviously I can only go so short and I am running into problems with the recoil tube. I'm thinking about cutting and re-threading the recoil tube so I can accomedate a shorter stock. HOW FAR DO YOU THINK I CAN CUT THE TUBE WITHOUT RUNNING INTO PROBLEMS WITH RECOIL? I DON'T THINK I WANT TO CUT MORE THAN AN INCH BUT WILL THIS BE TOO MUCH? PERHAPS JUST A HALF INCH WILL DO (trust me, with that big body armor every little inch in the length of pull makes a difference)

lastly, I will most likely make the barrel 14". SHOULD I LENGTHEN THE FORCING CONE OR ATTEMPT TO HAVE IT CHOKED? I BELIEVE THAT REMINGTON OFFERS THEIR POLICE 11-87 WITH 14" BARREL WITH A MODIFIED CHOKE.

Thank you for any insight and info.

This site is hosted by the Remington Society for the purpose of exchanging information concerning the collecting of Remington firearms. If you go to the home page and look under about the RSA, you will see how the RSA started and why. Most of the membership shoots and hunts but the main subject addressed by the RSA is collecting Remington firearms old and new. Your question is welcomed; however, you might find another forum concerning gunsmithing , or even contacting Remington Arms a better source of information for your questions. There may be a member here that has some answeres, but if not, you can understand why. Best of luck.
