My 85 year old friend of the family has a black powder muzzel loader that was handed down from his grandfather and has allways wondered when it was made. The only marks is the name Remington but no model numbers that he could find.
I have only started looking into this and have been told it looks like a Mule ear style lock. Maybe 1840 to 1860 era???
I can also get measurments and weight if it will help.

Where is it marked Remington? On the barrel or lock? My guess is that it has a Remington barrel and was made by a different gunsmith. This rifle is unusual in that it has a left handed side lock. Remington did make the Jenks Carbine with a side lock, but it was on the right, with a tape primer.

I will double check the name location. I believe he said he removed the stock and found it on the barrel under the stock.
I had some more input from a friend I showed the pictures to. He thinks it possibily may have been built by a gunsmith putting a Remington barrel with a lock and custom stock together to make a complete gun.
