More Model 12A questions....

Post by canuck_ontario »

First I'd like just like to say hello to everyone as this is my first post,

I just purchased my first model 12 slide, it was in pretty rough shape with enough gunk in the action to make me believe that it has not been cleaned in years. After a good cleaning I have several questions...

1 What year is my rifle? SN# 247,xxx

2. The action does not seem to move smoothly, is this common to these rifles?

3. Compared to pictures I've seen on net, the Cartridge Retainer seems to be bent too much, as if someone had done it on purpose, can this be the cause of the unsmooth action?

4. Is it safe to use high velocity ammo in these rifles or should i stick with standard velocity long rifle? (maybe a bit over cautious but this is a very nice firearm)

5. There are two releases for the slide action, why? (seems sorta like a silly question, I'm just curious to why they put both)

Welcome to the RSA website!!!

Your questions in order...

1. 1914 according to factory records.

2. The action should operate smoothly.

3. Not sure without inspection.

4. I would stick with std velocity. The bolt was beefed up when the M/121 replaced the M/12 in 1936 to handle the newer high velocity ammo.

5. I only know of one slide release. Your gun should have an action bar plunger, but it shouldn't release the action.

Thank you for the rapid response,

I should have been more specific about my question about the slide release, As my camera is kia at the moment I just edited someone else's picture off the net...

I suppose there is only one slide release, it's just that I don't understand why they put access to the one end inside the tigger guard as well.

I'll post some pictures of the rifle when I can get a hold of a camera.

Well I did another through cleaning which has solved my remaining problems. I have no doubt that many people have already figured this stuff out but it's new to me.

1) If you tighten the screws which hold the foreend in place too tightly the inner mag tube will not slide readily.

2) There's a small set screw in the action tube that if too loose will not allow you to slide the foreend back into place, if on the other hand you over tighten this set screw the inner mag tube will not slide readly.

3) My issue above with the cartridge retainer seems to be that the last owner bent the "spring" portion too much which made reassembly difficult but did not seem to effect function of the rifle.

4) The action seems much smoother now after a 2nd cleaning, it seems that the CLP I put on yesterday has really had at all contaminates on the action.
