Model 8 vs Model 81

Post by rudybolla »

I really like the look of both of these rifles. I realize that the Model 81 is an updated version of the Model 8, but is one better than the other in quality, etc.? Looking at a Model 81 in .35 Rem. Thanks for your ideas in advance.

Leaving aside the cosmetic differences (e.g. pistol grip vs. straight stock), reportedly one mechanical difference is in the firing pin rebound spring. See the groups.google.com post at:

Do be careful with the Model 8's, do not dry-fire them, since they have no firing-pin rebound spring, which was later remedied in the Model 81's.

Well, now I have a dilemma. Found another Model 81 in .300 Savage. Seems that the Savage cartridge may have a little more oomph than the .35, but I have no experience with either. Any opinions?
