Nickel 1858 Conversion

The gun is a nickel remington New Model 1858 conversion to 44 centerfire with 6 shot cylinder. Serial number 121005. Has W on receiver by hammer, p on receiver by cylinder, D on trigger guard and barrel. Grips are worn badly. Would like to know when it was manufactured and if it was made for the army.

Your gun was made in the end of 1864 and was purchased by the Army based on the inspector marks you indicate. It was probably converted after 1870 and nickeled at that time. Jay Huber RSA

Jay, Thanks for your reply. Did the Army send these back to Remington to be converted? There are no markings on the cylinder?

As far as I know the Army never sent any guns back for conversion. The Navy did however in 1875. About 1000 Navy Models to 38 CF. The larger calibers were bought at government auction and some may have been converted for Civilian use. To the best of my knowledge Remington would not accept individuals guns for conversion.
