Nylon 66 proof markings?

Post by onebohemian »

I'm very new to the Nylons so give me a break if I ask the same old questions everyone else always has. I searched the boards and didn't find much info to answer the following questions. Can't find the answers anywhere else on the net either so here goes.

I've read in a couple of online forums that if an owner sends a
request to Remington about a particular gun using the serial number,
Remington will provide additional information about the gun. I
partially disassembled a Nylon 66 (SG?) I bought last week because I
thought there would be a mold number under the metal receiver cover that I might use to request more info from Remington. The disassembly / re-assembly instructions I have show a picture of a 66 with a number
stamped under that particular gun's cover. There were no numbers
under my gun's cover. The only mark was a small capital letter "L" pressed into the plastic on one side. I think this is a Seneca Green model
based on what the seller lead me to believe and the nylon's color but
I'm just not 100% sure yet. I'm as colorblind as a bat and have no Mohawk Brown model to compare against. (Wouldn't be the first time I realized what I had was different than I thought, so I just want to confirm it to myself if I can.)

As for other markings on the gun, the barrel is stamped "BF U" on the
side where the manufactured code stamp is. I believe the "BF" combo
means January 1959. What does the "U" stand for? On the opposite
side of the barrel from the date code is a little symbol that resembles the female gender symbol. It's a circle with a plus-sign underneath it. I don't see any other markings on the gun, however, I only dissassembled it to the stage where I had all of the pieces that could come out of the top of the gun out (under the metal cover). I didn't pull the trigger guard and the gun's internal parts that would follow out the bottom of the gun. I need to ease myself into this so I figured going this far was enough on my first try of tear down / clean / reassemble. Heard some nightmares about getting these back together even with the re-assembly instructions in-hand.

So, in summary:

1.) What's the "L" cut/pressed into the nylon under the receiver metal cover mean?

2.) What's the "U" stand for in the date code on the barrel?

3.) Why don't I have a mold mark on the nylon under the receiver metal cover?

4.) What does the female gender symbol proof mean?

5.) Any other places I can look for more information about this gun? About Nylons in general?

Thanks in advance,

Can't answer you question about mold numbers and proofs but you can get a general idea of when your rifle was made by date codes on the barrel. The SG rifles had no serial number. They were made in 1959 through 1962. You date code on the barrel should indicate one of those years.

The SG stock looks kind of brownish green but it is sometimes hard to tell without comparing it to a regular brown stock.

I have a group on Yahoo specifically for the nylon rifles. There is lots of info in the files section and a number of photos in the photos section comaring the SG with the regular brown rifle. You do have to join to look at the files and photos.
