I have a buddy who just aquired a nice Grade 5 1889 in 12ga, ser# 40xxx. To the best of our abilty we estimate the gun to be in 50% condition. Our assesment was made using reference material from various sources and a current 2005 addition of Fjestads Blue Book. The gun functions perfectly is completely original and has no physical flaws other than normal wear form use and the expected aging to the metal and wood surfaces from time. What we would like to know is. Who can give an accurate professional appraisal of both the shotguns conditon and value. Are there any authorities that have expert knowlege of these old 1889 Remingtons and if so how do I get in touch with them?
Thanks, s6
1889 Grade 5 Hammergun
Chaz,
I really appreciate your interest and response. As I previously stated we used a number of references and primarily Fjestads blue book to make our determination. To be speciifc it was determined that the 1889 was a grade 5 by the following indicators. First and most indicative is the stamp of a number 5 just to the left of the serial number on the water table. This number 5 appears exactly where Fjestads said it should be and the number reference indicates grade according to them. Secondly the gun exibits other indicators that should be present as well. Those most prevalent are the fine engraving, the fine damascus barrels, and the fancy French Walnut furniture.
All of the research we have done clearly identifies this piece as a grade 5 1889. The serial # of 40xxx dates it as an 1891 manufactured hammergun. It is proudly wearing the Remington Arms Co. Ilion NY USA proofs as a true 1889 should.
ANYTHING you could tell us about this particular gun would be greatly appreciated.
