Remington model 11 help to idenify
I ran across a model 11 and need to know more about it. It is a 20 guage with a 30" barrel and solid rib. It has sportsman on the receiver and not on the bolt. There are three pheasants engraved on one side and three geese on the other. The checkering is alot fancier than the standard grade and the wood is very fancy-similiar like you would see on a modern day D or F grade. The fellow would like $1200.00 dollars. The gun looks about new. What grade is this gun and is this about the going price?

The early The Sportsman had a considerably larger checkering pattern on the grip then the later guns did. Also up to about 1936 or 37 they had the three-bird roll-stamp on either side of the receiver, and the name "The Sportsman" was on the left side of the receiver. Here is the brochure picture of the early-style The Sportsman --
Here is a brochure picture of the later one-bird style roll stamp and the smaller grip checkering.

If the gun in question is in fact a The Sportsman A the price is $900 to $1000 too high. If it is a factory original hand engraved D "Tournament", E "Expert" or F "Premier" grade it is a buy. They are often (?) marked with the grade in front of the loading port on the bottom. If the engraving is after-market who knows? Only with some good photographs posted here can we really give any even remotely accurate estimations.

What if it is a model 11 B grade? What kind of money would you think? It has better checkering and way better wood than the standard grade.

By the time of "The Sportsman" the B "Special" grades just had a better piece of wood. No better checkering.
They are so seldom encountered that it is pretty hard to guess a price. I'd be hard pressed to go over $550.
