#6 Improved 22 Rifle coating blueing question

I have what appears to me as a pretty good condition #6 Improved but I can’t determine what the finish is on the barrel and outside of the action. I have been told by some that it is paint but I know that if it were paint it would flake of extremely easy due to no primer. Whatever this coating is it is fairly tough. I have inserted pictures to help identify what it is along with the serial number (507165) and hope someone with knowledge like Roy Marcot might know what the coating is. I have been told by several people that I need “take the paint off and have it blued” but it looks so well applied and consistent that I am reluctant to do anything before finding out from someone knowledgeable.

What is the coating?

The no.6 improved barrels were painted. The specific type of paint I don't think anyone will be able to tell you that info. I don't know if that info is out there.

Do others agree that it is paint. Not to disagree with anyone but rather to to gain consensus.

It is a lacquer of some type. It was called a "Jappaned" finish.

Are there any of the books mentioned on this site that reference these being painted? I want to quiet those who say it is not original.

I love your lead-in. There is a book called Remington .22 Rimfire Rifles that does mention and show photos of the Jappaned finish on the Model 6 Improved. Call me with a VISA or MC and you will have proof...
