Model 700 Unknown

Post by lesterg3 »

Hello, I am new to this forum and have read the dates of manufacture but am still confused about the date, what the rifle is, and some other codes on the barrel.

Here is what I know,

It is a Model 700 in 7mm Mag caliber.

On the left side of the barrel the code U L L 12, and on that side of the receiver there is a number 97450.

On the right side of the barrel the first mark is the proof mark which is illegible, and then there is a heart, then another mark that is illegible.

I know this has a stainless barrel colored black, but am not sure of the receiver. Is that stainless also?

I am also interested in the twist rate?

How do you know if it is a ADL, BDL, etc, etc?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

According to the information you've given, the two L's indicate the rifle was manufactured in Feb. of 1964.

The receivers were not stainless steel. Remington continued to use stainless steel barrels until 1970 (as near as I can tell from the catalogs). I have a 1971 vintage ADL version in 7 Mag (with a beautiful wood stock) and it has an ordnance steel barrel.....not stainless.

The rate of twist for the 7 mm. calibers was 1 in 9".

Whether it's an ADL or BDL depends on whether it has a floorplate in front of the trigger guard.....the BDLs had black fore end tips and grip caps......and fancier checkering patterns (prior to 1969, they used a "fleur-de-lis" design checkering pattern similar to that used on the 870s for years).

If you go to this link and click on the Barrel Code Location Diagram it will give you a larger image to read and one you can save on your computer if you wish.

Hope that helps.

Wulfman,

Thanks for the great help. I guess I was confused by the letter U in front of the two L's. The picture shows an anchor for final inspection, I guess they used other letters and symbols for that too.

According to your description this must be an ADL, there are no black caps, or floor plate on this rifle.

And, the twist rate was great info, I thought they were all 1:10.

Again thanks for the help.
