remington model 241 year
my remington 241 has NO codes on the barrel.
it is serial number 3230.
it DOES NOT say speedmaster on the side.
when was this made ?
why no speedmaster logo on the side ?
it was my dads gun long before it was my gun at 10 yrs old (35 yrs ago) so any history would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Re: remington model 241 year
The M/241 was introduced in 1935. 7,200 were made that year so yours is certainly 1935 production. The introduction letter for the M/241 dated June 21, 1935 did not mention the term "Speedmaster". That name was added in 1936.
My bet is that the barrel does have a date code and proof marks stamped on the barrel. Remove the forearm and see if they are on the left side of the barrel. Sometimes they were stamped low enough on the barrel to be hidden by the forearm. The other possibility is that you have a non-Remington barrel added later. It isn't impossible that the date code wasn't stamped, but I have never seen one...

Re: remington model 241 year
thanks for the reply!
you were right about the marks being hidden by the foregrip.
It has DD or DL stamped near the mark that looks like an 'X'.
The lack of the 'Speedmaster" really perplexed me.

Re: remington model 241 year
DD would stand for April, 1935. Enjoy your M/241.
Re: remington model 241 year
Hello All,
My uncle recently came across a M/241 (.22 short version) in his mother's attic and asked me to do what I could with it. I've cleaned it up as best I can... the action was filthy and the metal had rust in large areas, but the receiver, barrel, and bolt do have matching serial numbers (11601). After oiling, steel wool, touch-up rebluing, etc, the parts I have look much better than they did. Still, it doesn't have a stock/forend and seems to be missing a few parts related to take-down, all of which I'll be helping him track down, but he's more interested in the history of the rifle than shooting it, really. Which brings me to my questions... I'd really like to be able to tell him the date and place of manufacture, and anything else interesting about the rifle. Is it possible, based on the pictures I've posted, to obtain this information? If I've missed some markings... please let me know of the possibility. I'm used to milsurp rifles, so I might miss something.
Receiver Left Side - Serial Number
Barrel Left Side - Date Code?
Barrel Left Side
Barrel Top
Barrel Top
Barrel Bottom - Serial Number
Barrel Right Side - Arsenal Mark?
The gun does not have "Speedmaster" printed on it anywhere, which makes me think it's part of an earlier production run (late 1930's?) but based on some of the dates claimed on gunbroker for rifles bearing serial numbers starting with 3, I'm not so sure. So, anybody want to take a stab at it? I'm particularly interested in whether it is a Standard/Special/Peerless/Expert/Premier grade, or whether it was intended as a gallery gun, etc. Still trying to figure out why anybody would bother with a .22 short for anything but a gun for a shooting gallery, but anyway...

Re: remington model 241 year
In the 1930s the 22 SHORT was still commonly used. Many were used in shooting galleries, but many were just used for normal shooting. Yours should have a date code on the left side of the barrel.

Re: remington model 241 year
Thanks for the info on the date-code, guys. Do you know where the rifle would have been manufactured? The little symbol on the right side of the barrel is the only thing that looks like an arsenal mark (to me)... or did manufacturers not do that for civilian rifles?
