New guy here with a Model 33 question

Post by Defender »

Hello All! First, let me say you all have a nice and very informative forum here.

I came across my great uncle's Model 33 while cleaning out my great aunt's house after she passed away. They were both very special to me, so the rifle has a very sentimental meaning to me as well. It is in what I consider decent shape, (I will post pics tomorrow when the camera is charged.) but could use some TLC and it should function as designed. My question is this. I found the date code underneath the forearm of the stock and it is stamped "XZ W" (the space is intentional as it is stamped exactly as typed. I checked your helpful manufacture date table and I can figure the manufacture date, December 1931 easy enough. But what does the "W" signify? I am also curious as to whether the stock is original, perhaps you folks can help with that as well once I post some photos.

Thanks for any help you can send my way!

The W is probably an inspectors stamp.

Thanks for the quick reply. I hope to have some photos up tomorrow so I can maybe get some more insight into the rifle.

Thanks

The M/33 was Remington's first bolt action 22. It was introduced in July 1931 and was made through November 1935. 263,552 were made. We can give you more info after you post photos. There were two major variations of the M/33. Your rifle was made during the transition. The earlier variation did not have grasping grooves in the front of the stock.
