Hi All,
Out of all my model 14,s except for one. There is evidence of case coloring at the rear of the action bar. I have one made in 1920 or 21 that doesn't show evidence of this. The gun is definately original.Anyone else have one like this? Thanks!

I lookeed at all of mine and none have case hardened action bars. The loading door(gate) is case hardened, of course. What is the serial range of this particular rifle?

Thanks for the reply Tom. The serial number is 801XX.If you look at he very rear of the action bar where it meets the receiver you can usually see a hint of flame or case color.
Re: Case hardening color at rear of model 14 action bar??
I have seen this on Model 14 Remingtons that have not been shot very much. What I think you are seeing is the result of the heat treatment process used for the actionbar. The treatment was no used the full length of the bar. This means the blueing "takes" differently in the area that was heat treated. It dose look somewhat like case color where the blueing didn't take near the receiver.
Tom, several of my guns had this on them and I think it was the same all through production. You will also find it on 141 Models (only on guns that have not been cycled very much).

Yes there is also the same thing on the Remington model 12s. They probably used the same process on all the pumps of that style. 12s, 14s, 25s.

So Guys, anyone see one that doesn't show evidence of this?I have one that is original with very little use and I can't see it on this one. Thanks!

I have noticed that even on guns that have color showing, they are not all the same. My opinion is that the heat treatment didn't always end at the exact same place. One other things that I seem to remember is that the treatment process was changed within the first two or three years. Rem 141, do you have that in your notes from the early salesmen meetings? I like to see the color when I'm trying to grade a rifle, it does not increase the value of the rifle by itself but does show the gun was not used as much as most.

Thanks for the reply shot1too.This rifle is in excellent shape, it even has what appears to be cosmoline in the action. Also, the bore is mirror. I'm thinking it may never have been shot. When looking at the rear of the action bar I can just see a very slight discoloration but not near the amount on my other 14's.

Glad you got a good one! When you look at a rifle like that, you can't help but think about whitetails.
