Remington Model 12 info needed
Remington Model 12 info needed
I recently aquired a Remington Model 12 that I am trying to get some information on. I have checked the various websites and there are some features/things that appear not to be normal. The serial number of he rifle is 240XXX. The number is located on the bottom of the reciever in front of the trigger assembly. There are the letters RW just above the serial number. It is not marked Model 12 on the receiver. It is chambered short, long and long rifle. There is a D on the left side of the barrel, near the receiver but no other letter. The barrel is round and is 22" not 20". It appears the stock, which is a very nicely figured piece of walnut, has been refinished and it has semi gloss finish. The receiver appears as though it may of been refinished but not the barrel though the quality of bluing on both is excellant. Any help regarding history would be greatly appreciated.
Re: Remington Model 12 info needed
Your rifle was made c. 1913 so would not have a barrel code. The RW stands for REMINGTON WORKS and is on all M/12s from that era. The "D" is an inspector or proof mark. The 22" barrel is not normal Rem production. Many M/12s were returned to the factory for barrel replacements in the late 1930s. They were fitted with M/121 barrels. Yours might have a 121 barrel that has been shortened. Measure again and forward the barrel stamps and I may be able to help more.
Re: Remington Model 12 info needed
Thank you for your quick response! The barrel is 21 1/4 inches to the front of the reciever, I added 3/4 inch for the threaded portion in the receiver. The barrel is marked "Remington" and under that is "trade mark" under that is ".22 short, Long or Long Rifle". These markings are all directly behind the rear sight. The "D" is below that with a line under it and a small triangular mark under the line. In front of the sight is the following;
REMINGTON ARMS -- UNION METALIC CARTRIDGE CO, REMINGTON WORKS, ILION, N.Y. U.S.A.
PEDERSON'S PATENTS JAN.5,1909, OCT.12,1909,MAY 8,1910,NOV.21,1911,APR.16,1912
There are no other markings on the barrel
I tried to attach some prictures but I can not figure it out. If you could send me an email address I could send the picture file for sure. My email is sgehring@msn.com
thanks

Re: Remington Model 12 info needed
What you have is a standard model 12 or a 12-A. The exact leingth of all the 12 -A barrels were 21 1/4 they just classified them as 22" barrels.
Re: Remington Model 12 info needed
I had read at one of the web sites that the Remington model 12 barrels were measured at 19 1/4" and then 3/4 added for the receiver to make the 20" barrel so I am a little confused! I hope to hear John's comments on this to. Thanks for the information. I wish I could download the pictures. The rifle is in great shape with beautiful wood, probably refinished. This is the link to site were I got the barrell measuring information; http://aaa-webs.com/aaa/webs/homestead/ ... ations.htm

Re: Remington Model 12 info needed
The 12-As had 22" barrels and the 12-C had 24" barrels. I already knew what the books said, but I still went up and measured mine. Out of 11 model 12-As that I have all of them measured 21 1/4 from barrel tip to the front of the reciever minus threads. Now this does not go for all 12-As because people modify guns like they do cars. If they alter something it automatically becomes CUSTOM then they really feel they have something. Like John said and he would know toward the end of the run in 1936 12s that were sent back for barrel repair were sent back to there owners with 121 barrels. 121 early models I believe had 22" barrels and were soon leingthend to 24". They were replaced with 121 barrels because there 12 barrel stock was already exhausted. I have seen a lot of out of the ordinary things on 12s though. I just purchased a model 12 NO.3 that the factory installed a NO. 1 barrel on. The 12s were listed as grades 1-6 until 1913 when they changed A-F. Send me a picture remington600@att.net

I will sent some pics when I get home, I am at work now. Based on the patent dates on the barrel do you feel this is a model 12 barrel or a 121 barrel on a 12 frame.
Thanks a lot.

I would say its a 12 barrel. It has the standard mid production barrel stamping for a 12. It later changed to a succesor to stamping. Either way you have the best 22 rifle Remington ever made.I've shot a BUNCH of 12s and maybe I have been lucky, but I have not had one that did not shoot great.the ones that I own and have shot I know I can hit a paper plate at 100 yards with out misses granted thereisnt 30 mph winds.
