REMINGTON MODEL OF 1917 .375 H&H Origins? Can someone help!

Post by FredAle1 »

I recently purchased a beautiful old Custom Big bore .375 H&H circa late 50's, or early 60's. The previous owner did not know much about it. He was just getting rid of it for someone else. I gave it a good going over and took it to the range. It's a great shooter. It has been well mantained. The action is very tight and smooth. I hope to take it on a Buffalo hunt in South Dakota soon.

I have tried to find information about its origins on the net without any luck, I thought it might have been a model 725 Kodiak from the 60's but the numbers range did not match. Or maybe a 700(???). At this point I am stumped.

I know that Remington took some leftover Enfield type actions and made some sporting and custom rifles out of them, but I have not been able to locate any information to confirm this as one of them. I am hoping some of you may be able to help identify its origins;when and where it was made, and what model applies to it.

The rifle sports a nice walnut Monte Carlo stock with checkering and an understated cheekpiece. It has a ventilated butt pad with a white and black spacer. When I removed the barrel and action you can see that the stock had been reworked and fitted for the larger caliber barrel and enlarged for bigger ammo in the mag box area. The action is a Eddystone Enfield type. It does not have the rabbit ear sights found in military models. The top is smooth and is tapped for scope with two mounting holes in front of the ejection area and another two holes behind it. It is a blued long action, maybe BDL. The floor plate is detachable, not hinged. On the front top portion of the receiver the following is stamped "Model Of 1917", Below that "679790", and below that "REMINGTON" The 24" barrel is also blued, smooth, round and tapered with .375 stamped on the left side near the base. No front sights, or other markings are found anywhere on the barrel. On the left side of the receiver where the bolt release mechanism is there is a stamp that resembles an upside down "[Lilly flower]" like mark, some of which are` accompanied by numbers. This stamp is also found in several other areas of the action: Behind the safety (Top "[Lilly]", Bottom "R"), on the bottom of the receiver in front of the mag area [Lilly] 353, plus nail like indentations, one of which resembles a canted V and the other crossed resembling an X. The bolt is "cock on opening" and also sports similar markings. It has a round ball, swept back handle with an "R" marking underneath. There is a round recess on the back side at the base of the bolt handle that has a squared "U" stamped inside and the "[Lilly]" flower like stamped mark with the numbers 251. It also has the letters "E N" stamped on the side of the locking grooves on the rear of the bolt.

I hope some of you may be able to help. I have not been able to find the serial numbers anywhere (That would have made it so much easier) so... Does anyone know When :?: , and Where :?: was this rifle made, and What :?: model is it??? Any help will be greatly appreciated...

I doubt its a Kodiak. A picture would help out considerably.

I am pretty sure it came out of the Remington Custom Shop...But When? and what model designation?
Does anyone know the numbering sequence for the model 700 when it started in '62? Maybe it is a 700 with an old style bolt???

That seems like a possibility. Can you give me the url so I may dig a bit further? Thanks

Does anyone else have any suggestions? Maybe where to track the old military serial numbers?
