I know my 550-1 was made between 41 and 1970, but how do I affectively narrow the hunt to the exact date or can I?
Also where would I find the serial number or other marking that might assit in narrowing down to the manifactoring date?
thanks,
Buck

There is a good chance that the gun does not have a serial number. There maybe a barrel code though. If shooting the gun on the left side of the barrel near the reciever there maybe multiple stampings. On the homepage of this site there is a section that says manufacture dating. It will ealk you through and tell you how to date your rifle.

Remington600,
Having a hard time relating the barrell code and date tables to my barrell.
Left side of my barrell next to the reciever is:
". 7 7" followed by 3 smaller vertical lines right against the reciever.
Right side of my barrell next to the reciever is:
"O 1 X" or the letter O or a zero followed by #1 or small L followed by larger X.

I am having a hard time following that as well. The letter L could stand for 1964. You say that there is a NO. 3 stamped on the side of the barrel. That means at sometime of the guns life it was sent back to the factory for repair. Are you sure the 7 7 on the side of the barrel maybe z z. Does the top of the barrel say 550-1 or does it just 550 or does it have 550 1 with no dash. The 550 stamp came between 1941 to 1946. The 550 1 (no dash) from 1946 to 1948. Then the 550-1. Does it have a grooved reciever? The 550 was made from 1941 to 1971.
