572 Fieldmaster mfr date and general insight

Post by rorycalhoun »

Just picked up a unique 572 this morning, barrel code is WKV78. It's got a corn-cob fore grip and smooth, 870-style stock, and appears to be virtually unfired. I can't pin down that date code, any ideas?

I was looking for a repeater for my 10 year old son at a local shop, found him a decent Marlin 75C for $75 and spotted this on the rack for $125. I did a quick peek at Google that night and it seemed like a good deal, so I went back for it. The more I look into it, the more I'm thinkin' that I got a steal!

Every good hunting story I can tell involves either my 870 12ga, my model 700 .270, or my Blackhawk. I can't wait to take this pump to the squirrels - my kid thinks he's going to trade me for the Marlin - LOL!

Thanks for the info, I think it's 2001.

Was the corn-cob fore grip common on these rifles? Other than on posts here, I've never seen one in my travels, only checkered.

I can't wait to take this to the field in a couple of weeks!

With a few exceptions, the corn cob was used on the ADL, the checkered on the BDL.

Enjoy your 572. My bet is that yours was made in '79. Check the butt plate. If it has "Remington" in a circle, it's '79. If it has a fancy RSA Logo, it's '01.

This one has Remington in a circle, and I'm simply amazed that this rifle could be almost 30 years old. I'll post a couple of pics.

Stoked it up with CCI CB shorts this morning and stormed the backyard. It fed and fired 20 rounds perfectly, and from 10 yards the CBs were moment-of-watermelon accurate. (Had my wife spray the windows with the hose to cover up the sound...:-)

good luck with that gun. $125 is a real good price. some of them are real accurate, others not. i had one with a 3-9 scope that i used to drill squirrel brains at 50 yards with and another almost identical that shot 6" groups at 50 yards with all ammo. i have heard others say the same. they are fun to plink with though and a real nice compliment to an 870 and 760. i would like to find one that shot like my dads.
