I just bought 2 remington 870's One has never been shot, one is a little older, very little use.
The question i have is that they are very different guns.
The older one is serial number ab5254xxm and had Remington 870 express stamped on the reciever, and has a mahogany stock. It has a matte finish
The "newer" one has never been shot has a laminated walnut stock and foregrip, has a much nicer fit and finish on all parts (reciever, bolt, stock) It has remington 870 stamped into the reciever (not express) It also has a matte finish on the gun and the stock. On the bottom of the stock there is an R burned into the stock (the other one doesnt have this) the serial number for this gun is w9239xxm
Can someone help me figure out what it is that i have?

Neither of those guns are more than 20 years old. Not very old by gun collector standards. Shoddy workmanship and materials are more to blame on the corporate executives that cut corners and cheapened the look of the 870 - to improve it's sell ability to the new generation of hunters that wanted nearly zero maintence and 100% reliability - with the Remington name on it.
What you have there is an 870 Express - which was the cheapest model that they offered when it was made. and a plain 870 - but not a Wingmaster on the second one.
For some reason, people seem to think that serial numbers means something. It's not like a car - where you can just look at the number and determine the date and time that the gun was made.
Like our other member has said, look at the barrel codes - on the link provided and match them to the ones on your shotguns and you should be in the park of when they were made.
