I would also look into calling Mahoning Valley Milling in Punxsutawney, because they have a qualified gunsmith on hand to repair most any firearm and would be willing to do your work for you for a reasonable amount of money.

Remington telling you to throw away your old rifle and give them $413 + tax and shipping for a new rifle is just a slap in the face.
That is nothing more than the full asking price of a brand new rifle.
No .22 rifle is worth that amount of money.
