I just bought a double barrel 12 gauge shot gun from a co worker i work with. i paid a mear $75.00. in between the barrels it says E. Remington and Sons Ilion, N.Y., has a 30" barrels, external hammers, the for end snaps into place with a nifty pull tab locking device. under the barrels the it read 8079 above this number is the number 59, on the right side of the
frame there is three lines that are very difficult to read, from what i can make out (with a jewlers loop) they all appeared to be double struck theyread as follows
line 1) patten
line 2) AU C C 1871
line 3) APR 181872
the barrels appear to have no design in them nor a pattern.
i keep hearing water table? what is this?
any and all help is much appreciated
thanks PRISONGUARD

E. Remington & Sons made a great variety of hammer doubles. The early versions used the Hepburn design lifter-action to open the gun. The later guns had conventional top lever that you push to the right to open. The Deeley & Edge lever forearm fastener came into use on the last lifter-action guns, Model 1879, and was in use on all the top lever guns -- Models 1882, 1883, 1885 and 1887. Watertable is the term for the flat part of the receiver that the barrel flats close down against. Normally the lowest grade (Grade 1) Remington hammer doubles came with "decarbonized steel" barrels, the Grade 2 would have Twist barrels and the Grade 3 Damascus barrels. These three lowest grades were all plain with no engraving, and the only real difference was the barrel material. The higher grades, Grades 4 to 7 had increasingly finer Damascus barrels, increasing amounts and quality of engraving, finer European Walnut stock wood with increasingly finer and more elaborate checkering.
I can't tell the various E. Remington & Sons hammer doubles by model without Charles G. Semmer's book "Remington Double Shotguns" and the gun in hand or at least some good detailed pictures. The book is available from the author 7885 Cyd Drive, Denver, CO 80221, for $60 plus $5 shipping and handling. It is invaluable if you are going to shoot, invest, collect or play in the Remington double gun field.

From the serial number you gave your Remington is a Model 1882
if you could post some pictures I could tell you the definite answer.
The serial number you gave 8079 should be stamped on the barrel
flats and the reciver water table where the barrels come together
when you close the gun. Also the serial number should be stamp on
the forend iron and wood. You got a good buy. Are you selling?
