Mod 81 in .300 Savage
I have a Mod. 81 .300 Savage in excellent condition. It has the original open sights. I have tried to use it deer hunting in the Wisconsin woods but have found that after the first shot the sight elevation wedge moves and drops the rear sight down from the recoil to the lowest level. I don't wish to mar or alter the gun from original. Any suggestions?

Take it to a gunsmith.
You probably have the wrong wedge that goes under the ramp sight.
Even if the sight is replaced, you will not change the value of the gun.
A 300 Savage does not have all that much recoil, so it isn't something that would be a normal problem.
At the same time, the Model 81 isn't all that valueable of a gun that it cannot be changed from origional.
Guns are made for shooting, not collecting.

Wouldn't it make sense to try a different elevator instead of taking it to a gunsmith???

Thanks, guys. I like to do both. I have M8s and M81s in all the calibers, except for .30 Remington, and I'm looking for one of those. This is particular rifle of the nicest M81s that I've seen, and I'd like to keep it that way for future generations. Any idea where I might find a new "elevator"?

I guess I need to get rid of my collection. I just retitle mine as a gun gathering.

Seems to me that saying guns are for shooting not collecting is like saying money is for spending not saving. It also begs the question of why are you on this site if you beleive that? I also disagree that changing the site won't reduce the value of the rifle in question. When I stared collecting Model 14 rifles they were cheap, but over the years they became down right valuable. In the end, the return on my invetments on the model 14s gave me a better retun than I could have gotten from a bank. The Model 8 and 81 are going the same way. I also met many good people at the RSA while collecting. I hope you get the chance to do the same.

Do you possibly have the elevator installed in the wrong direction. Your front sight would have to be pretty loose or way out of shape for it to fall out every time, but it is possible. Seeing that you have others I am sure you are smart enough to know,but I have looked for my sunglasses before when they were on top of my head. Keep collecting.
