Age of Remington Model 700 in .22-250?

Post by cobra63 »

I'm looking at purchasing a used Model 700 in .22-250 caliber. Would like some advice as to it's age. S/N is 167595. DWM 0 is also marked on the barrel.

Has what I would call "fleur de lis" checkering, cheek piece, and black fore-end cap.

Any idea of approximate value? Condition is good.

Thanks.

Your rifle is a BDL that was assembled in Aug. 1965 shortly after the chambering was first offered in the 700 line of rifles. Specific value is dependent on many factors and without seeing the piece is hard to judge. There should be an original metal butt plate and sling swivel studs. Check the crown on the end of the barrel and condition of the rifling and stock. Try to determine the amount of use by the previous owner and base your offer on these factors.

Thanks for the help on the age of the rifle. Crown is in good shape; no nicks that I can see. Rifling looks to be crisp, bore is mirror-bright. I cleaned the bore with foaming cleaner; just a few patches was all it took to get clean. The man who owns it said he bought it used 30 years ago and only put a box or two of shells through it. Hard to say how it was treated prior to coming into his possession, but judging from the condition, it doesn't seem to have been abused.

Yes, it has the metal butt plate, and sling swivels. Nice quick-detach leather sling is included. It also has a spring-loaded magazine floor.

BTW, I took it out and shot it.....the thing is a tack-driver. After a couple fouling shots, the next three were through the same ragged hole. I think I like this rifle! Going to S. Dakota next week to reduce the prairie-dog population; planning on taking this gun as backup to my Ruger .204. If it performs as well as I think it will, I hope to add it to my gun cabinet permanently.

If the seller lets you try it out, then take it out in the field in another state I wouldn't haggle too hard on the price.
