Thank you! Are there any books or literature out there that will give dates of manufacture?

Our Remington .22 rimfire rifles book (see books on this site) does not give the years of manufacture by serial number. We did not include what we had from the factory because it was increasingly inaccurate in the later years. We do show the various changes by year and serial numbers as close as we could determine. There are 16 pages on the No. 4.

Remington records do show your No. 4 was made in 1923. My guess is that it was made a few years before that. Check the bottom of the barrel ahead of the fore-end for a barrel code. If it was made after 1921 it will have a barrel code. The barrel code "key" is also on this site. Let us know if it has a barrel code & the date of manufacture (if barrel coded) please....

Depending on how it is read it is either a Z or an N ahead of the forearm. It is a Z if stamped in the same way as the serial number or an N if turned 90 degrees. There are also several letters on the bottom barrel flat at the breech. There is a J a Y and a smaller letter p at the breech and a little farther forward a T and a W. I do not know if it makes any difference but this is a .32 cal. I believe that an N is 1921 and a Z is 1931.
