Remington Woodmaster Model 742

Post by LThompson79 »

My grandfather passed away back in Nov. and left for me his Remington Woodmaster 30-06 Model#742. I have never owned a gun or for that matter even fired one. No one in the family is sure about the history of the gun and I was wondering how to tell how old it is. I've looked around on a few sites but nothing seems to help me. Like I said I'm new to the gunworld and any infomation I could about the gun would make it that much more special to me. Thanks.

Click on the Remington Society of America icon on the top of the page and go to the home page and look at the page marked dates of manufacture.

Basically there is a diagram that shows you the barrel stamping on the side of the barrel and a chart that tells you what letter corisponds with what stamp mark on the side of the barrel.

It appears to be a "F", but what are the other letters or numbers?

From the barrel stamping - R M - I get November 1965. The 9 is the inspector and the F is the assembler, usually. From the pics the bluing looks nice. Keep it dry and wipe it down with a gun cloth and enjoy. Your grandkids will be treasuring it as you are.
