Grandfather's old rifle

Hello...I was hoping to find more information on my grandfrather's old rifle. The rifle reads "32 Rem." & "UMC-Remington" . The rifle also has the following numbers on the bottom of the gun "C 47XX" (maybe the serial number?) The top of the barrel reads "Remington & Union Metallic Cartiridge Co." and has patent dates of 1909 and 1910. The rifle measures approximately 40.5 inches in length and the barrel measures approximately 21.25" in length. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I don't pretend to be an older Remington rifle aficionado, but could you let us know if your rifle is a bolt, pump, or semi auto action. That will give us a starting point where us not-know-so-muchs can work from. Remington's website has a sportsman's library section with all rifles made listed in more or less chronological order in order of action under the firearm model history section.

First of all, I wanted to thank everybody who responded to my question. I actually wrote down the wrong patent dates on my original post...the patent dates listed on the rifle are Oct. 12, 1909 and July 5, 1910. The rifle also reads, "Remington - UMC" on the butt of the rifle handle. Thanks to Tbury for identifying the rifle as a Model 14 .32 Remington Rifle. Is there any way to figure out when the rifle was made, because of the patent dates, I'm assuming that the rifle was made before 1921. Also, if somebody could give me an idea of value, so I can figure out if I should insure it. Thank you in advance for everybody's help. I've tried to attach pictures, but it said that my filed were too big to attach.

Your rifle was made toward the end of the 1912 production year. That is the first year of production. If it is in original condition it should have a hard rubber shotgun butt plate with a UMC marking. The rear sight should be a wheel elevator (most likely a wide buckhorn) The the two holes in the tang should be missing. The ammunition indicator should be slightly below the surface of the receiver. First year production rifles are getting hard to find in original condition. The end serial number for 1912 is 4943, according to documents found at the Remington factory.

Thanks again (Tbury, Shot1too, & Noel) for taking time out of your days to help me out. I don't know much about guns but really wanted to find out more about my grandfather's rifle. Your posts have been a tremendous help. I'm not sure what a "tang" or "wheel elevator" are, but I do recognize that the rifle has the UMC hard rubber butt plate which is consistent with Shot1too's post. It is so nice to have to finally have some information to go along with the rifle. The gun appears to be in great overall condition (looking at the exterior), but I've never fired the rifle to attest to it's working condition.

I just found one of these rifles in my Mother Inlaw's attic. How do I go about getting the manufacture date from Remington? My serial # is in the C146XX range. Also, were can I find the schematic or parts map so I can see how to break it down for cleaning?

It says that it's a Winchester 25. I'll go check the ammo stamp and let you know if it's different.

Try this link. Depending on your connection, it may take awhile to download. Please note that the diagram is of the final version of the Model 14. Your rifle is the first version, so some of the parts will look a little diffrent. It still uses the same take down procedures.
