1876 Lifter 2 barrel set

Post by ohiosam »

I have a Remington 1876 lifter sn 3939. Straight, checkered stock with some nice grain. Flat faced hammers. No engraving. I have 2 sets of barrels the first are 10 gauge, steel barrels marked E. Remington and Sons Ilion NY. SN 3939 but no other numbers on the barrels. At some point in time these barrels were damaged and cut to 18 inches.

The 2nd set are 12 gauge, steel 28 inches marked Remington Arms Co. Ilion NY USA. They have the 3939 sn on the flats so it seems that Remington fitted the new barrels. The pellt counts on the barrels are 37 on the right and 43 on the left. Now there is another set of numbers(34922) on what I'd call the hooks. Would this be a sn# that could date the barrels and repairs? Would this gun be a grade 1 or grade 2? Also one of the screws that holds the hammers on has been replaced, anyone know where I could find an original?

HI, I would like to see this gun and barrels. You said there one set is 10 ga. and one 12 ga. usually in a two barrel set of different gauges there are two forends one for each set of barrels because of the diameter of barrels. If I remember right Remington did not stamp pellet count till 1889 Model. You said you need a hammer screw I have them. I could tell you more I need to see pictures or the gun.Happy to help all I can..

HI,
I just reread your decripition and you said the second set of barrels are marked Remington Arms Co. Ilion N.Y. USA. That means they are or replace after 1888 because E.Remington & Son's went bankrupt and was sold and name changed to Remington Arms Co. Ilion N.Y. USA. The same as on your second set of barrels..

2shooter,
I was familiar with the Remington reorganization in 1888. That why I was interested if the 34922 number might be a serial number if so that might date the new barrel to around 1890 according to Semmer's book.

Hope these are good enough to help. Let me know if there is something specific I could try to photograph.

The 10 gauge barrels spent 50 years in a barn, so they were pretty rusty and have no finish left.
