Model 721/Cracked Bolt

Post by Guest »

My neighbor has an older Remington bolt action 30-06 that was handed down to him from his grandfather. The date code (O xx 44) indicates that it was made in July 1951. There is no model number on the rifle that I can find (scope mount may be hiding it) so I'm assuming it is a model 721 which were manufactured from 1948-1961. Serial # is 1946**

The problem is that there is a small crack just rearward (say about 3/8-1/2") of one of the locking lugs on the bolt.

My questions are:

Can this crack be repaired and would it be safe if repaired?

A rather cursory search for a new bolt leads me to believe that one will be difficult to find. Anyone know of a source?

If a new bolt is required and can be found I would assume that it will have to be fitted and headspaced. Will this be difficult/expensive to do?

Is this a model 721?

I have done a search before posting and got very little on the 721's

Thanks!!!!!

721 bolt bodies were made in two pieces with a fine line joint about 3/8" back of the lugs. I hope this is what you see. Have a good gunsmith check it out to be sure. The date info you have is right on.
