1887 Plinker information wanted

Post by wthw »

I recently purchased an 1887 Plinker Pistol, it is a commercial version (no inspector marks) and varies only slightly from the description in Mr. Landskron's book. The front sight is a lyman 3/32" ivory bead, the rear sight has a very small semi-circular notch, both are dovetailed to the barrel. The barrel is marked "Rebored and Rifl'd by J Stevens A&T Co Chicopee Falls, Mass" on top and with a letter L on the bottom of the barrel near the receiver. It is 25 Stevens rf cal. I'm curious about the history of these 25 cal. pistols, did Remington send all of these to Stevens to be bored and rifled or was this done by the owner of this pistol. Perhaps it was sold as a 22rf and converted to 25rf. Actually this is my first rolling block pistol so I'd appreciate any information I can get. Thank you
