Hello,
Thanks for letting me be part of the group.
I believe I have ran across a Remington E Remington and Sons 1885 Grade 2 in a 16ga. Barrel length is 30", choked Cyl/Cyl with 2 1/2" chambers.
I need to clean the stock up due to dirt and oil build up but beside that, I'm leaving it alone.
What really caught my eye is that this 1885 is as tight as a new double. No wiggle or play anywhere. Very tight with no cracks or repairs. Bores are shiny and the hammer spring are still very strong. Buttplate is a little worn but no cracks or chips. All numbers match and I don't see any sign of the screws being turned. Just a tight and right old Side by Side.
My question is, is this a rare configuration? I can't find another 1885 16ga on the internet.
I would love to know a value if anyone knows and anyone's opinion on this 1885.
Thank you in advance!
Bill

Vey nice 1885! The 16 gauge seems to be vey illusive to collectors, I know one that specialized in 16 gauge Remington SxS's and looked of many years of an 1889 in any grade. I'm always a bit suspicious of cyl/cyl as it usually means a cut off barrel.

Very nice! Good find.
Was thinking the same about the chokes, but overall it's in great condition.

Remington offered barrel length of 28, 30 or 32". Of course Remington would make a gun to order. Still cal/cyl choke seems questionable. We need pics of the muzzle to help determine if the barrel was cut.

Was that measured with a bore mic or a drop-in plug gauge? If the bore is anything but the "standard" .662" a plug gauge is worthless! In general, their best use is as a decoy anchor. Parker Bros. doubles into the mid-1890s were very over-bored. I'm not familiar with the E. Remington & Sons doubles, as my main focus is the Remington Arms Co. hammerless doubles. My 12-gauges from 1895 & 6 are .740" and .744" while my guns from 1905 to 1909 are within a thou or two of "standard."Barrel length is 30", choked Cyl/Cyl with 2 1/2" chambers.
