Basic question on an 1873 Whitmore Hammer Lifter shotgun
Basic question on an 1873 Whitmore Hammer Lifter shotgun
I am looking at an 1873 Whitmore Hammer Lifter shotgun in 10 gauge. Can't figure out how to separate the barrels from the receiver after taking the fore-end off ?? I know it has to be something simple. I would appreciate some advice, Thanks.

Hold the lever the right, keep lowering the barrels downward (straight and smooth) gently lift up off of the pivot point

I was sideways when I dictated the tutorial! Yes, push the lever up and hold it.--not sideways

Thank You for the responses back on this. I don't actually have it myself, so I can't get hands on it. Trying to talk a buddy through it that is out of state. I will pass your responses on to him and see if he can get the barrels separated from the receiver. Thanks again.
I have several old Remington double barrel external hammered shotguns in 10 gauge. But not an 1873 Whitmore Hammer Lifter, so I have no experience with that particular model.

Re: Basic question on an 1873 Whitmore Hammer Lifter shotgun
Just heard back from my buddy, and he finally got the barrels separated from the receiver. He said he had been lifting up on the barrel release before, but this time he put more pressure on it and the barrels came apart from the receiver finally. I knew it had to be something simple that he was probably already doing. So thanks for the advice on this, it is appreciated.

Most of the lifter guns I've seen have quite a bit of wear play. As Remington changed models they advanced greatly with metallurgy as well as design technology. Turn of the century models were much stronger, I have a number of SxS's as fully functional shooters.
Re: Basic question on an 1873 Whitmore Hammer Lifter shotgun
I have several other Remington side by side double barrel external hammer shotguns. But not a Hammer Lifter or a Lifter. I think I will begin a quest to acquire those 2 models as well. I have a definite passion for old double barrel external hammer shotguns in 10 gauge. I have several Remingtons already as well as Ithacas, Colts and Parker Brothers.
Thanks again for your help with this.
