10 Gauge Shells
10 Gauge Shells
I have a very good condition top lever, 1887 Grade 1, 10 Gauge with 32" decarbonized barrels, serial 20406. I am ordering Mr. Semmer's book which sounds as though it will go into great detail but was hoping for some answers from you. First, what is the correct length shells for this 10 Gauge? I see a lot of references to 2 5/8" and below 6,000 psi for 12G but nothing on 10G. Second are there sources for 10G blackpowder ammunition? I have struck out on web searches so far. I have found 12G on the Vintagers site etc but no 10G. Thanks.
Re: 10 Gauge Shells
Bill, Your 1887 orginal chamber length is 2 7/8 inch unless it is spl.order it would stamped on bottom of barrels. Or if somebody lengthen them you would have to measure them.I reload brass shells 3 1/2 drms 2fg black powder 1 1/4 oz shot.
Re: 10 Gauge Shells
Just saw ad in Jan/Feb SHOOTING SPORTSMAN for RST. They have just announced 10 gauge 2 7/8" shells are now available. Mystery solved.
Re: 10 Gauge Shells
I shoot a 1873 hammer lifter with the same barrels with nitro loads. Sherman Bell writting in the DGJ has some excellent articles on low pressure 10ga loads. These loads are good for the old SxSs with damascus barrels. Paul
Re: 10 Gauge Shells
Also BPI has 10ga plastic shells. I use the brass in 12ga- didn't know anyone made em for 10ga. Any handload around 7000psi or lower will work whether smoke, or smokeless. Paul
Re: 10 Gauge Shells
Rocky Mountain cartridge can make you the shells that you need.
