Model 10D dating assistance

Post by Bison1R »

Ok, so this past weekend I traded a handgun for a low serial number model 10. Barrel and receiver SN's match. Barrel, while significantly shortened,is stamped with a D. Now, based on the research that I've been able to do, the serial number places the date of manufacture somewhere between 1908 and 1911. I was hoping that someone here could point me in the direction of a chart or table that would allow me to narrow it down a little further.

In the event that someone has a hard copy of one, the serial number is 11706. Thank you all for your time and any assistance you can provide.

Old Researcher has been chewing on this a bit. We know from the old "between the Wars" factory ledger that Model 10 production had reached serial number 172939 on September 30, 1919, with the first entry in the ledger. The Remington Repeating Shotgun first appears in the 1908-09 Remington Arms Co. catalogue, so I'm picking September 1908 as a starting date. That gives us 11 years dividing 172939 or about 15721 3/4 guns per year.

1908-09 -- 1 to 15721
1909-10 -- 15722 to 31442
1910-11 -- 31423 to 47164
1911-12 -- 47165 to 62886
1912-13 -- 62887 to 78607
1913-14 -- 78608 to 94329
1914-15 -- 94330 to 110051
1915-16 -- 110052 to 125772
1916-17 -- 125773 to 141494
1917-18 -- 141495 to 157215
1918-19 -- 157216 to 172939

Company names --

Before 1911 -- Remington Arms Co.
1911 to 1916 -- Remington Arms - Union Metallic Cartridge Co.
1916 to 1920 – The Remington Arms Union Metallic Cartridge Co., Inc.
1920 onwards -- Remington Arms Co., Inc.

Thank you for that information. Based on this information, I'm going to go with a manufacture of summer of 1908 as a safe bet.

Sorry to be late to the game.

Where is it stamped with a D?

Is it engraved in any manner?

Pictures never hurt if you can manage a few.

As for production dating serial numbers this chart was published in the RSA Journal where and by whom it was developed I do not know or recall.

Good Luck with it they were very popular in the early 1900's!

There is no engraving. The barrel is stamped D about an inch after the receiver on the underside facing the magazine tube. Aside from the serial number, manufacturer stamp, and trademark it's the only marking on the gun. That being said, the barrel is barely legal at this point. I measured it at 18 3/16" overall length.

Your is more than likely a 10A grade then and the D is an inspection stamp.
