Remington model 11-48 410 skeet w compensator

Post by dhenzler »

I just acquired this shotgun, and am searching for info on the compensator that is on it. Wondering if it left the factory like this, or if it was modified afterwards. Looks like it might be to control muzzle jump...

The barrel is marked "SKEET" which denotes the factory choke. The muzzle device is an add-on after the gun left the factory. The ports might help to reduce recoil and/or muzzle rise but it also reduces the pressure pushing on the wad. A reduction in pressure can provide better pattern uniformity.

The device is marked Lyman. I understand that this is a Lyman Cutts Compensator. Some photos I've seen show a screw in tube that adds constriction. I'm primarily interested in Skeet shooting so a skeet choke is all that I desire. Can I assume that the original skeet choke is still there? Or has the installation of this Lyman device destroyed that?

Any knowledge on this would be appreciated.

The original skeet choke should be gone. The CUTTS is the substitute for a factory choke, originally it was probably provided with several chokes.

A modern replacement remedy would be to install screw-in chokes, eliminating the CUTTS completely.

What a shame... although it's possible that it may pattern well and break targets just fine. I originally thought it was a factory install. But learned it is aftermarket. I prefer a fixed skeet choke personally... not going to get loose.

I have a couple 1100 Sporting 410's but mostly for collection. I may shoot one. But the chance of scratching it up isn't worth the fun it would be... This one should be a good shooter hopefully.

So the barrel markings Skeet are meaningless... the seller should have divulged this information.

Thanks for your assist.
