Model 1100 22” magnum barrel gas port question

Post by Balancedbadger »

i just picked up a 12 gauge model 1100 magnum. It has the 22”(it measures 21”from the bolt face) smooth bore barrel stamped 2 3/4 and 3”. It is a rem choke barrel. It has the rife sights as well. My question is should this barrel have one or two gas ports? It has two. I have not been unable find any good information on gas port configuration for the 22” magnum barrel. My concern is that someone had a second port drilled to run lighter loads. I am concerned because all the information I find on the longer magnum barrels says they have one gas port. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have a listing of your particular barrel but two ports does not surprise me. Short barrels have less time to use the available gas pressure than longer barrels.

In addition to the gas port there are different weights of the Action Bar Sleeve that are part of the functioning cycle.

Thank you for the reply. I was wondering if that may be the case.

I have been doing some testing with different Winchester AA #8 1 1/8oz loads. The 1300fps/3 1/4dr-eq cycles just fine. The 1145fps/2 3/4dr-eq does not cycle. I have picked up some 1200 and 1250 fps/3dr-eq but have not tested it yet. These results seem to line up with what people are saying cycles In a magnum.

I will check the action bar sleeve. Is there a good way to tell a magnum vs a regular one?

I wouldn't worry too much about the action bar sleeve, I was just letting you know that there is more more than just gas ports involved. An internet search for images of "action bar sleeve" will readily show the difference, one will be more "solid" while the other will show the areas where weight has been removed.

Thank you again.

now that I see it the difference between the sleeves is unmistakable.

My magnum does in fact have the correct action bar sleeve.

Yeah, once you see the difference it's hard to miss. The heavier one makes it harder to cycle the action with the magnum loads, and the lighter one helps with lighter loads. Combined with the various gas ports and barrel lengths the M1100 works well with a variety of loads.
