Model 141 safety

Post by Thumbshooter58 »

I purchased a 1946 era 141 in .35 Remington some time ago and it came with a left handed safety- which seems to be working as intended. I was under the impression these could be flipped for right/left handed use. When I looked into changing it to right handed I noticed on parts list that right and left safety buttons have a different part number.
I expect finding the other part would be tricky -so if that's needed I'm not going to mess with disassembling. Does anyone have experience with this?

Yep!
Installed 20-30 left hand safeties over the years. When you know what you're doing, have some of the basic needed tools it takes about 15 minutes. Added benefit is you get to clean the accumulated gunk out of the trigger/safety area. It does require complete removal of the trigger, bushing, trigger spring, trigger rod, trigger spring cap, & safety. The 141 was blessed with a far easier to remove/install "trigger spring cap" (installing the cap on the 14's is an adventure).

I will add that those who attempt this the first few times find the trigger spring will "launch" the cap into orbit while you're trying insert it into the dimple on the back of the trigger. Remember you are dealing with "the latest in 1910 technology". Its also common that the the spring will pop off as well, not a difficult job but can be annoying.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Jim! I'll set about finding a right-handed button for a winter project. The gun is in great shape and it seems a shame not to take it for an outing or two- but I'd feel better with it set up right handed.

If you can't readily find one, let me know. I probably have a couple of dozen.

Again, not fun to install but gives you the chance to really clean out the trigger pocket and polish the trigger bushing which always improves the pull or at the very least makes it smoother.

If possible, what is the process involved in flipping the handedness of the safety on a model 14? Does it require a separate part as with the model 141?

Its the same process with the same parts, only real difference is the "trigger spring cap" on the 141 was re-designed for a MUCH easier installation. Just to be clear, there is a difference between a right and left hand cross bolt safety so you can't just turn around the existing part.

Jim, thanks for the info. I know you mentioned earlier in this thread that you had some cross bolt safeties in your collection. I am looking to swap from a right hand accessed, to a left hand safety for ease of access by us southpaws. Do you have any left handed cross bolt safeties you’d be willing to part with?

Also, what is the proper tool / sized punch used to remove the trigger bushing as part of this process?

I have been using a brass punch I made 45 years ago to remove the bushings, have no idea as to the actual size. I also use the punch to hold the trigger in place during the installation of the trigger spring, spring rod, and cap. I don't have a left hand safety at present but have seen them "frequently" on Ebay and Gunbroker.

Getting back to the punch, feel sure you can readily find one, and it doesn't have to be exact but make sure its brass or it "could" damage the bushing.

At one time I had a bag with twenty four (24) left hand safeties for the 14/141, thought I had used them all up but had no reason to check, and YES I do have some.

Here's the rub, all I have is Priority mail boxes, the post office round trip is 90 minutes, and I would charge like $40 for the safety or $52 with postage. I know this might sound stupid but for the time to package it, take it to the post office, wait in line, the cost of the gas............I lose money on every transaction like this so I hate it. Now that I've had a good "whine", send the $$$ and I'll send the @#$%^@#& left hand safety....lol.
