I inherited from my grandfather (born 1885) a Model 17 with two barrels (24" and 28"). Both barrels are roll-stamped "Metallic Cartridge" etc. The 28" barrel is stamped "3208" and "Full" near the action end; on the opposite side is stamped R.E.P. within a stamped oval. The action end of the 24" barrel is stamped (might be hand-stamped) "CYL"; "Mod"; and 2 more stamps I can't decipher. One quarter way around the action end of the barrel appears the same "R.E.P" stamp seen on the 28" barrel. Ahead of the action on the bottom of the shotgun are the stamps "BO" (or B0) with "3208" below it. Attached are some key photos.
Questions: When made? 1920? The shotgun and the 28" barrel are both stamped 3208, and there is no date code as used later.
What is the REP stamp?
What explanation might there be for a 24" barrel, apparently mod cyl, which Remington doesn't list in the Model 17 catalog?
Any comments on the stamps that I couldn't decipher?
Thanks!
