Dating my 25-20

Post by Just-a-pup »

I still have not figured out how to read this date code. Can someone please tell me how to determine the date of manufacture, based on these pictures ? Thank You !

One list I see says later 1927. I can see the letters on the LEFT side of the barrel. Down low, slightly obscured. What those say is your date. I see a W I think. May well be 1928. A "U" would confirm my 1927 thoughts

I had not even seen those markings. Yes that is a W, with a triangle ( A ? ) in front of it. Not to sound greedy, but can you tell me what any of the other markings mean ? Are they Remington marks, or are they "previous owner" marks ? It's a fun little gun, and I'm pleased to learn a little more about it ! Thank You !

The right side are all standard markings for Proofing and such. AW on the left side would somewhat line up with the serial number era at March, 1928-which is an anomaly from the serial number dating list I saw, but not off by a lot. The AW is one of really 3 markings on the left. With AW considered the 2nd mark(group) from left to right, the first would be the inspector and the 3rd would be the assembler/builder. First and third are sometimes letters, numbers or a special "mark", not a letter or number.

May I jump in here and ask about the date on my Model 25 25-20? Mark on barrel is WN and receiver serial number is AA 78. Thanks.

So it looks like this rifle was made just under a hundred years ago, and the documentation leaves a few gray areas. Today everything we buy, from new cars to potato chips, is bar-coded and serialized to identify date, time, batch number, etc. We are living through interesting times ! Thank You for your help !
