Another Rookie here. I was wondering about the hole in front of the trigger guard (assuming for a swing swivel). Does this identify with certain counties? Assuming I have a military #1. Obtained this incomplete in a gun lot. The barrel is 21-5” with absolutely no rifling noted.
There is also a whole through the tang stamp.

Re: Rolling Block ID
Hi There,
You are correct. the hole in the front of the trigger guard was for
a sling swivel. The frame is the type 2 with bar extractor. It would
be helpful if there was a picture showing the breach block with the
breach open.
The hole in the upper tang is probably for some kind of peep sight.
The barrel with no rifling could be from many applications. The
chamber size would be helpful in determining.
Cheers!

Re: Rolling Block ID
Had a couple old photos with action open. Unfortunately, I’m out of the house this week on the road and can’t check the chamber size. Thank your for the info.

Re: Rolling Block ID
Hi There,
I wanted to see if the breech was concave or flat. Your last pics show
that the breech is flat. So, this puts the manufacture date after August
of 1870.
It is hard to see but I think I see the shoulder in the chamber. This means
the caliber could be a .43 Spanish. Can you make a chamber cast?
Cheers!

Re: Rolling Block ID
I can probably figure out the chamber casting. Thank you again for your knowledge.
