another 700BDL date problem

Post by cheers »

The date table doesn't seem to apply to the 700 BDL I bought new in the mid-60s. Other than the "proof" marks, there are only two numbers (64) on the left side of the barrel. No letters. If it helps, the S/N is 6360035. (270 cal). Any thoughts? THX

Serial number says July or August, 1970 for a receiver stamp date. There are no "proof" marks on the left side of the barrel. Left side is allocated for assembly stampings. You mite have an OT or WT on the LHS unless it was built in the Custom Shop-then the calibre designation will be irregular. Proofs are on the RHS of every rifle.

Thanks for info 600RemGuy. Yes, about the proofs, but the reading of the S/N on the left side of the receiver can't be right since I bought the rifle long before 1970.
I had it in my hands in '65, '66 or "67. What do you think of the # 64 on the left side of the barrel immediately to the left of the receiver? There are no letters of the alphabet preceding the #64 as you would expect. In fact, there aren't any letters on the left side of the barrel. The S/N on the left side of the receiver is 6360035. Thanks again. Any help is appreciated. Ron (Cheers)

Unsure what to say. 7 digit serial numbers did not start until 1969 with 6200000. Until then only 6 digits were present. No 700 serial numbers started with a 6 prior to then.

Some clues. How many digits of the serial number are hand engraved on the bolt? At the safety, is there an F for fire and S for safe? Is there a patch of checkering on the top of the pistol grip behind the rearmost receiver bolt hole? Is there a magazine cutout in the rear receiver bridge? Is the sear one piece or 2?

The 64 is not representing the year. It is highly likely the assembler but may be the final inspector.

Pictures would tell the correct story.

It looks like you have your finger on the correct source. I've been trying to correlate events from when I bought the rifle about 54 years ago, but it is very tough, especially now that I'm 84. Thank you for the time and effort you spent with me on this question. Much appreciated. Ron
