Some 12 GA 1100s have a plastic buffer in the rear of the bolt, some don't. My 1970's? 2-3/4" gun has a buffer. It's not in hand at the moment so I can't look up the date of manuf.
Can I use a "no-buffer" type bolt in this 1100? Can bolts simply be swapped from one gun to another?
Lastly, I am going to replace the broken white bolt buffer in the 1100 with a nos black one. Just how much, if any, should be above flush with the rear of the bolt? Thanks

Re: 1100 Bolt Swap
I thought there would be more activity here than there is. I found some info from a local knowledgeable gunsmith, but was hoping to get some input from the forum.

Re: 1100 Bolt Swap
I don't think I've ever looked into swapping bolts between the two. I probably wouldn't myself, sometimes more than one change is made at the factory.
The buffer is a one size fits all, amount of protrusion is not meant to be measured. Be sure the firing pin moves freely after drilling.
Note ~ If the current Firing Pin Retractor Spring is the old style then I would replace it since the bolt is already apart. The new style spring has the coils touching each other in the middle of the spring.

Hello Mainspring!
I bought a new firing pin retractor spring as you described, coils touching in the middle. The local guy said swapping bolts can be done but you have to make sure that the fit of breech lock to the barrel hood recess is good. The reason I was asking was I thought about swapping in a bolt from one of my other guns until I replace the buffer. I'll just repair it and leave well enough alone. Thanks for the reply!

Re: 1100 Bolt Swap
Swapping bolts temporarily is what I pictured, headspace is the concern.
The old retractor springs tend to break in the middle, the two halves will screw themselves together making the spring shorter. This short spring will no longer "retract" the firing pin enough for the hammer to deliver the blow necessary for primer ignition, a failure to fire.
