Hello
A good friend of mine has a Remington New Model Army that came in the original military holster. The serial number is 83,496. Is there anyway to find out where this was shipped to or issued? He's a pre-internet/computer collector and asked if I'd be willing to check online for any information.
I thought that this would be the best place.
Thank you in advance for any help!!!

Remington New Model Army question
Re: Remington New Model Army question
Hi Rick,
Your friend's NMA was made in July, 1864, but Remington kept no records like Colt or other companies did. In fact, most Remington records were destroyed about 1900.
If it was a US contract pistol, sub-inspectors would have stamped a single letter on the major parts of the pistol. The final inspector's stamp will be 2 or 3 letters in a rectangle on the lower, left grip.
There are some records from the Civil War, but not by gun or serial. There will be some depot records, and many units recorded serial numbers, but it takes a lot of research time to dig out any information. Usually some one will have what unit a man was in, and then search the records of that unit.

Re: Remington New Model Army question
Thank you for the info! I'll let my buddy know. It does have the inspector's markings and cartouche on the left grip.
it sounds like there might be some info in the Springfield Research Service volumes 1-4 on the NMAs, but unfortunately I don't have those.
