1875 - Barrel Address/Roll Mark

Post by 1875_or_bust »

Hey now,

I am looking at a Remington 1875 in 44-40 and everything looks and feels right, but I am having an issue with the barrel address or stamping. The font does not seem to match any of the examples I can find on the interweb. I believe this pistol was produced towards the end of their production due to the front sight, direction of the barrel stamping, batch number, etc. I’ve also read that there was some variation in some of the markings, but is this marking legitimate? I would appreciate your expertise.

Hi,

Hopefully Bill T. will chime in since he has a data base on the 75s. Your example looks he same as my 75-45, which is one of the last 75s made, so I'd say that it's a legit marking. My few 75s are half left hand, and half right hand marking, and I think that the markings are one of the things that Bill has recorded. Bill may ask for the info on all the 75s that you have. On the other hand, if you have any 1890 revolvers, I am collecting info on that model, so please get in touch and we can go from there.

Daniel,

Would you be confident enough to take a chance and buy it?

Hi 1875,

I can't base a decision on just one small area of any gun, especially an engraved one. How does the rest of the pistol look. Do the numbers match? Does the engraving look old with unsharp cuts? Is all the lettering in the same condition? If the rest of the pistol checks out I'd buy it. But to the point, I compared your photo to the markings on a couple of late production 75s, and they look the same.

Here is a photo of the correct barrel address.
Notice the font differences from the posting here on the engraved revolver.

What is the serial number of this engraved revolver 1875 that is showing a different barrel bold block style address font?

Perhaps since this is an engraved gun, the engraver decided to go over the original barrel address with a deeper address bold font ?
