Can you provide the history of the Remington M31?
Years of manufacture, models and serial numbers by year.
Thanks

This link is to the Remington Arms history site. This will give you all the basic history. The Model 31 was made during the time the barrel date codes were in use. Go to the RSA home page and click on the heading for manufacture dates. The code is on the left side of the barrel near the receiver.

Is there anything resembling an authoritative article on the Model 31, describing the engineering changes and the different grades? There really is not very much information on these shotguns anywhere on the internet that is of use to someone who might want to collect them.

There were three evolutions of the Model 31 Remington -- the 1931 version, the 1934 version and the 1941 version. The 1941 version has the best take-down mechanism IMHO and has the enlarged trigger group for a better grip feel and more room in the trigger guard for a gloved finger. Several dealers on ebay are offereing laser copies of the Remington service manual pages for the Model 31. Often old Remington catalogues and illustrated price lists of the period the Model 31 was produced are available on ebay. I've only been into Model 31s for a couple of years, but I've amassed four catalogues of the period and seven different Model 31 brochures. The earliest paper I have on the Model 31, offeres it in 12-gauge only, but by the August 1933 Illustrated price list it is offered in 12-, 16-, and 20-gauges.
