Slings on Model 14??

Post by Greg T »

Is there any way that a sling for hunting can be added to this rifle? I was thinking perhaps a barrel band type of attachment could be put on the part that supports the forward end of the magazine tube and then some kind of strap arrangement could be placed on/around the butt such as some do for rifles that cannot take a swivel stud in the buttstock for one reason or another. I've looked at Michael's products but don't think they make one to fit. I can invent something to hold the butt end of the sling strap if necessary, it is the forward end that has me wondering.
Thanks again,

Model 14 Swivel Set at Brownell's

Post by Greg T »

Hello and thanks for going to the trouble to recheck. I noticed also that they changed the number and I also located that little table you noted at the bottom of the page. I figured out the set I need as I measured the band that the magazine tube slides through. That is where I would put the "barrel band" part of the kit. The number I would need for mine is: Description:
1595 2-QDSG-3 1" Swivel set , Stock number:593-159-003.
They sure did not make that easy to find in the catalog!
Thanks again.

model 14 sling

I have tried the type that clamp onto the barrel and have a nice little nick near my front sight from when I was climbing over a tree and the clip came clean off the rifle and the front swung violently to the ground hitting a rock.

The problem with the clamp on type is that you attach them to the barrel just forward of the magazine tube (when it's in the extended position). However, the barrel tapers towards the muzzle and if you carry your rifle slung over your sholder with the muzzle pointed upward, over time, this will cause the little clamp-together cuff to slide towards the muzzle which makes the little tension screw loose and the next thing you know, your rifle is in the dirt.

I simply took a pice of 1/8" diameter nylon rope and tied it around the barrel just behind the little band that holds the tube magazine to the barrel. (there's about a 1/8" gap there). I took about a 5 inch string to do this so I have a nice little loop. I then repeated the process for security. I just attach the front-end of a standard sling to the 'loops'.

As for the rear sling mount, I simply drilled the stock to accept a screw-in type rear sling mount. I haven't had any problems with this setup and have used it for the past 3 hunting seasons - I do a lot of walking down deer-trails so there's a lot of climbing, crawling, and the rifle gets bumped around quite a bit - so far, this setup hasn't let me down.

Attaching sling swivel to Model 14

Post by Greg T »

For the very reason that you state, I plan on using the little little band that guides the magazine tube for the attachment location, not the barrel itself. the guide band is not tapered thus it should work just fine. Will also put a little drop of Loctite in place before I tighten the swivel split band down. I am also going to use the screw with the hole for the detachable sling swivel that screws into a hole that is drilled in the buttstock. Thanks for your note. Like minds must run on the same channel!!
