I have a rem 700 .308 varmit made I think around 1990, it has the locking stud on the rear of the bolt. how do you take it apart for cleaning?

You don't!

The bolt should only require a small amount of lubricant to keep it from rusting / tarnishing.

The only internal lubrication it should ever need is a drop or two of kerosene.

The bolt while hunting is inside of the breech and there for doesn't get dirt into it.

While in storage, the most it gets is dust on the outside.

A Model 700 is not a military rifle that is operated in extreme foul weather or something that your life depended on.

You will do more damage taking it apart and putting it back together than what it might benefit by a good cleaning.

If it has a problem, take it to a qualified gunsmith.

The Remington Arms site has the owner's manuals.

I checked to see if this question was covered in the manual, and it is. I have have taken many 700 rifle bolts apart with no problem. The firing pin is under extreme tension so be careful. It would be much better to have someone show you how to do it the first time. Good luck.

thanks the manual helped out a little, who would have guessed you needed a coin, also looks by the construction, taking the bolt apart is not really needed very often. its a pretty simple design.
